Vienna Basin (Lindabrunn): The Vienna Basin lies sunken between the Eastern Alps and the Western Carpathians; due to oblique extension, its faults are often arranged like stage wings. Its subsidence was compensated by simultaneous filling with sediments. A tropical sea, which became brackish over millions of years (Lake Pannon) and gradually silted up, filled it; among others, the primeval Danube flowed into the lake with a large delta.
