PATHFINDER ⇄ THE BODYBOX

Body as toolbox · body as architecture

The starting point is a full-body scan from 1991: some 350 black-and-white photographs. Since then the bodily unwrappings and surfaces have served as a toolbox – an artistic repertoire of forms from which houses, cities and containers are built.

Version D is the fourth re-translation. After measurement (A), wayfinding (B) and archive (C) the body is built: as parts list, floor plan, housing, site plan and tower. The images, scans, drawings and video stills from 1991 to 1998 were translated into dynamic forms as “time particles” with video AI in 2025 – THE BODYBOX. SCULPTURE IN MOTION I, the contribution to Videocity St. Pölten 2026/27.

Toolbox. The 1991 full-body scan broke the body into stripes and segments. What was recording technique then is a parts store today: head, chin, torso, back, knee, foot – every part a position in the parts list, every unwrapping a semi-finished product. Version D reaches into this box and builds.

Architecture. The head unwrapping becomes a floor plan, its brightness height, its contour lines walls. In 1998 THE BODYBOX was already a house: an industrial container with body skin, inside a projection room, on the move through the city. “The body as house, as construction or even as a walk-in sarcophagus with an inner life” (Sabine Winkler).

Time particles. In 2025 images, scans, drawings and video stills were transformed with video AI and edited in a conventional video production. Version D shows both side by side: the source and its translation, the still and the dynamic form – and places both in the plan.

Visual language. The blueprint: Prussian blue, line white and one signal – red lead, the primer on steel. Every chapter is a sheet with frame, axis grid and title block; chapter changes are sheet changes, a hatching runs across the sheet. The header of this page is a dimension chain across the length of the container: 7,200 mm.

„These bodily unwrappings and flattenings have since served as a bodily toolbox, as an artistic repertoire of forms.“MARKUS WINTERSBERGER 2025

Opening – Standbild

00Opening

LONG 0:00 · TRAILER 0:00

A sheet frame with axis grid. THE BODYBOX is drawn isometrically, dimensioned (720 × 265 × 250 cm) and clad in the body skin – the title stands beside the housing: “GEHÄUSE · Body as toolbox · Body as architecture”.

I · Toolbox – Standbild

01I · Toolbox

LONG 0:20 · TRAILER 0:14

From the stack of some 350 black-and-white photographs of the 1991 full-body scan, sixteen parts fly into a parts list – scans, montages, sketches, simulations. Then the body rebuilds itself: eight parts become eight storeys of a building section, from foot to head.

II · Time particles – Standbild

02II · Time particles

LONG 1:08 · TRAILER 0:45

Five sources from 1991 to 1998 – striped light, simulation, body layers, interior, head as sphere – and beside them their translation by video AI in 2025. Below runs the timeline of the conventional edit; at the end an AI sequence fills the sheet, with the original 2025 sound.

III · Floor plan – Standbild

03III · Floor plan

LONG 2:00 · TRAILER 1:16

The 1994 head unwrapping becomes a floor plan: contour lines become walls, eyes, nose and mouth become rooms – hall, staircase, courtyard, annex. A section A–A through the eyes lifts the face out of the plan as a building.

IV · Housing – Standbild

04IV · Housing

LONG 2:52 · TRAILER 1:47

THE BODYBOX in elevation and plan, scale 1 : 25: outside the digital plots of the body surface, inside the projection. The 1998 interior simulation meets the 2025 AI cube – “the body as house, as construction or even as a walk-in sarcophagus”.

V · Urban space – Standbild

05V · Urban space

LONG 3:48 · TRAILER 2:18

A site plan from Vienna via Krems to Linz: seven locations of the container in 1998, from the Aspang industrial station to the O.K Centre. On the A1 the sculpture is accelerated – motion blur instead of slit –, beside it the 2025 AI façades.

VI · Monument – Standbild

06VI · Monument

LONG 4:40 · TRAILER 2:49

The eight storeys grow into the body tower, beside them the scale figure and the container at the same scale. “The birth of a new monumental self” (Sabine Winkler 1998) – and a 2025 AI figure that recognises itself as an other.

THE BODYBOX. SCULPTURE IN MOTION I (1998–2025). Images, scans, drawings and video stills of THE BODYBOX were transformed in 2025 as “time particles” with video AI (Kling AI), translated into dynamic forms and then edited in a conventional video production. The film (3:33, 4K) is Markus Wintersberger’s contribution to Videocity “Morphing Realities” in St. Pölten (13 Nov 2026 – 14 Feb 2027, USTP Foyer B).

BODYBOX 1998. A container is positioned in public space, transported by truck, presented like an exhibition object and at the same time serves as a carrier surface for images. Through projections inside, virtual and real space penetrate each other. The body surface becomes the building skin, the container a housing, the journey through urban space an accelerated sculpture.
