PATHFINDER ⇄ THE BODYBOX

Skin as relief · light as tool

A relief shows itself only when light grazes it at a low angle. In 1991 the body was scanned in striped light; in 1998 its skin became the skin of a container, and on the motorway every light swept across it.

Version E takes this skin at its word: it is the original skin of the sculpture THE BODYBOX, rectified from the 1998 photographs of the container and arranged like the “2D map for 3D box” of that time – no collage, no new image. A single light wanders across it. Nothing more is needed.

Skin

ORIGINAL SKIN 1998 · RECTIFIED

PHOTO 1998 · RECTIFIEDRAKING LIGHT 2026

In 1998 the container’s skin was a skin landscape of close-ups of the body: pores, folds, a mirrored face on the front, a torso on the roof, a dark oval between the locking bars of the rear doors.

For Version E this skin was recovered from the photographs of the container: each surface is rectified through its four corners (homography) – front and long side from wab-018, roof and opposite side from the top view wab-008, the rear doors from wab-020. The arrangement follows the 1998 unwrapping; there the two long sides are mirror images, so the opposite side is mirrored. The brightness of the photographed skin yields the relief map with which the light reads the skin anew.

Drag the slider: left the rectified 1998 photograph, right the same skin in raking light.

Five surfaces, one net: roof in the middle, walls at the edges. Dragging the slider folds the skin into the container – which can be placed on a table in AR.

Skin
Perspective rectification of the container surfaces from the 1998 photographs (OpenCV, homography through four corners, Lanczos), greyscale with light balancing, relief map from photo brightness (high-pass, Sobel) – no collage, no AI image generation.
Image
Own image engine (Python · NumPy · Numba · OpenCV): raking light as Lambert shading of the relief map with a wandering cone of light, projected striped light, scan line as transition; 3D scenes with own rasterisation, the skin lit per frame in surface space. 3840 × 2160 · 25 fps · H.264 High 5.1.
Sound
Synthesised numerically: projector and scanner, skin noise, drone in fifths, steel when folding, truck and passing cars; inside the original 2025 sound. −16 LUFS.
3D · AR
glTF 2.0 from own Python writer: original skin as colour and normal map, folding net with hinges, doors, projection, raking light (KHR_lights_punctual), film camera · Blender exports (glTF, OBJ with textures, FBX with rig) · USDZ for iOS Quick Look · model-viewer with WebXR and Scene Viewer.
Archive
Indexer v10: additionally all 3D formats with web GLB, poster, dimensions, animations, USDZ and QR code per model; large image previews (1400 px) for the full-screen view; source code in full text; desktop app as a slim shell with its own protocol (pba://), packaged without symlinks.
